HPV Testing Guidelines Updated for Head and Neck Carcinomas
New evidence expands recommendations for sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma and standardizes p16 immunohistochemistry interpretation.
The College of American Pathologists has released updated guidelines for human papillomavirus testing in head and neck carcinomas, providing refined testing strategies for various anatomic sites and addressing key areas such as HPV testing in sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma, specific interpretation criteria for p16 immunohistochemistry, and testing recommendations for fine-needle aspiration specimens. Dr. James S. Lewis Jr led the investigation and the guidelines recommend routine HPV testing in SNSCC, using RNA in situ hybridization and p16 IHC as a screening tool for confirmatory HPV-specific testing.
1. Updated guidelines for HPV testing in head and neck carcinomas released by the College of American Pathologists2. Recommendations include routine HPV testing in sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma3. For oropharyngeal tissue specimens, p16 IHC is recommended as a surrogate marker4. HPV-specific testing is emphasized for FNA specimens5. DNA-ISH is not recommended for HPV-specific testing due to its lower sensitivity
