Epilepsy Linked to Heart Risks in Seniors

Share

Older adults with a history of epilepsy have a higher likelihood of experiencing new cardiovascular events, with enzyme-inducing antiseizure medications (EIASM) contributing significantly to this increased risk. A cohort study on 27,230 participants revealed that individuals with epilepsy had approximately double the risk of new cardiovascular events compared to those without epilepsy. The use of EIASMs accounted for nearly one-third of this elevated risk. The study underscores the potential influence of medication on the cardiovascular health of older adults with epilepsy.
