A recent study published in Immunity reveals the connection between chronic intestinal inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer development. It identifies tumor necrosis factor–like cytokine 1A (TL1A) as a key player in inflammation and immune responses, leading to an increase in neutrophils associated with tumor growth. Researchers utilized mouse models and human intestinal tissue to demonstrate that TL1A stimulates innate immune cells, which in turn promote cancer-associated inflammation in the colon. Findings suggest potential pathways for assessing cancer risk in IBD patients.
