A systematic review and meta-analysis published in Perioperative Medicine found that preoperative education modestly reduced anxiety and postoperative pain in patients undergoing elective hip or knee arthroplasty. Involving 19 randomized controlled trials with 2,116 adults, the study revealed that while such educational interventions improved patient knowledge, they did not significantly affect discharge timing, complications, or quality of life. The findings suggest that preoperative education may be beneficial, particularly for anxious patients, but should be tailored to individual needs and integrated within broader recovery programs.
