A multicenter study in Cameroon has established Brucella abortus as the sole circulating Brucella species in livestock across three regions, revealing an 8.3% prevalence in cattle and 7.3% in goats. Conducted from February 2021 to May 2023, the study analyzed 4,612 animals using bacterial culture, real-time PCR, and serologic tests. The research highlights the limitations of using serology alone for species identification and emphasizes the need for complementary diagnostic methods. The genomic findings suggest a longstanding presence of this strain in the region, underscoring public health implications for zoonotic transmission.
