11-fold higher HCC risk in patients with cirrhosis.

HCC surveillance more critical in older adults.

A large cohort study led by Magnus Holmer, PhD, at the Karolinska Institute examined the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). Analyzing data from 3,071 patients across Europe over 38,000 person-years, it found that HCC developed in only 1.3% of patients, primarily those with cirrhosis and older than 50. The study suggests that HCC surveillance is more critical in older patients with cirrhosis, as younger patients with PSC generally have a low risk of HCC.
