A recent study in mSystems utilized shotgun metagenomic sequencing to explore the gut microbiome's relationship with coronary artery disease (CAD). The analysis of stool samples from 14 CAD patients and 28 controls revealed 520 bacterial species, with 15 significantly associated with CAD. Notably, Lachnospiraceae were enriched, while SCFA-producing bacteria were reduced, indicating a link to systemic inflammation. Discerning metabolic pathways involved revealed increased activity in urea and glycolysis, suggesting novel microbiome-based biomarkers for cardiovascular risk assessment.
