A recent case-control study has revealed that patients with thyroid eye disease (TED) exhibit a higher prevalence of low-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infections compared to those with autoimmune hyperthyroidism alone. Conducted using the TriNetX electronic health record platform, the study identified 26,824 TED cases among 246,957 patients with autoimmune hyperthyroidism. Notably, the risk of prior low-risk HPV infections was more than 1.5 times higher in TED patients, particularly those infected before hyperthyroidism diagnosis. These findings may elucidate potential links between HPV and TED pathogenesis, highlighting the need for further research to improve prevention and management strategies.
